About Genogram Maker
Genogram Maker is a free, browser-based tool for drawing genograms in standard clinical notation — the McGoldrick–Gerson symbol set used in family therapy, social work, nursing, and medicine.
We built it because the existing options split into two camps: expensive desktop software that looks like it shipped in 2003, and generic diagram apps whose "genogram templates" get the notation wrong. If a diagram is going into a chart, a case file, or a graded assignment, the symbols have to be right. Ours are — and every one of them is documented with rendered figures in the symbols reference.
Design decisions we care about:
- Private by default. Your genogram is autosaved in your own browser and never uploaded. Family data — especially client and patient data — shouldn't live on someone else's server just to draw a diagram.
- No signup wall. The tool and exports work instantly. Free exports carry a small footer watermark; that's the whole business model, plus an optional Pro upgrade.
- Standards first. Squares, circles, slashes, drop lines, and emotional overlays follow the conventions taught in counseling, MSW, and nursing programs.
- Honest examples. Every example family on this site is fictional and labeled as such.
Genogram Maker is independently built and maintained. Questions, corrections (especially notation corrections from clinicians and instructors), and feature requests are welcome — contact us.
