includes watermarkIncludes a title block and an auto-generated legend of the symbols you used.
What's actually free?
The whole builder. Add unlimited people across 3–4 generations; draw marriages, divorces, separations, and cohabitation; attach biological, adopted, and foster children and twins; overlay close, fused, distant, conflict, and cutoff lines; mark deceased and index persons; and export finished PNG or PDF files with a title block and an auto-generated legend. Free exports carry a small "Made with genogram-maker.com" footer watermark — that's the entire catch. A Pro option (watermark-free, high-resolution export) exists for people who need pristine files for publication.
Why free tools usually fall short — and what we did differently
Most free genogram makers are either general diagram apps with a genogram sticker pack (wrong notation, no emotional layer) or teasers that lock export behind a signup wall. This one was built from McGoldrick-standard notation first — the full symbol set is documented here — and export is a button, not a funnel. Your data also never leaves the browser: work is autosaved locally, which is the right default when the diagram contains client or patient information.
Good places to start
- Three clinical templates — family therapy, family health history, social work assessment — pre-connected and editable.
- Worked examples that narrate the notation symbol by symbol.
- The full editor with autosave, undo, auto-arrange, and keyboard shortcuts.
